Comprehensive Vision Checks in San Diego, CA
When was the last time you had your eyes checked? Did you know that some eye problems are linked to other health conditions? At Coastal Skin and Eye Institute, we are committed to providing the best eye and skin care for your active San Diego lifestyle. Our Board-certified physicians offer top quality care to keep your skin and eyes healthy. We offer comprehensive vision checks to preserve your eye health.

Comprehensive eye exam versus vision screening

A vision screening is simply a general eye test that helps identify patients who may be at risk for vision problems. This type of screening is often performed at a general physician’s office or when you have your driver’s license renewed. It usually involves reading a line on an eye chart. A comprehensive vision check is an in-depth assessment of your vision and overall eye health. A board-certified ophthalmologist performs this.

Regardless of your age or physical health, a yearly comprehensive eye exam helps detect potential eye problems at an early stage. Early diagnosis and treatment are important, as problems are easier to treat before they develop into a more serious complication. During an eye exam, your doctor will determine the quality of your vision, check for common eye diseases, and use your eyes as an indicator of your overall health.

Eye Exams for Adults in San Diego
Regular eye examinations are just as important as routine visits with a family doctor or dentist. Adults need to make sure their prescriptions are current and have their eyes assessed for early signs of eye disease. Even adults who do not wear corrective lenses should have their eyes checked. To keep your eyes healthy and maintain your quality of vision, the American Optometric Association (AOA) recommends a comprehensive eye examination every other year for adults between the ages of 18 and 60 and annual eye exams for adults over the age of 60. Certain job requirements, drugs, or health conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes may result in needing more frequent exams.

Importance of comprehensive vision checks

Eye examinations at every age and life stage can keep your vision strong. In addition to evaluating the quality of your vision, the highly qualified team at Coastal Skin and Eye Institute will check for eye diseases or problems that could lead to vision loss. Some eye problems are silent, meaning you may not immediately notice the symptoms until the problem has become severe. Your eye doctor will check your eyes for the following problems:
Eye Diseases in San Diego
  • Eye diseases – In their earliest stages, many eye diseases such as glaucoma and diabetic eye disease have no obvious symptoms. Your trained and experienced eye doctor is able to assess the inside and outside of your eye. Often, when problems are detected and treated early the potential for permanent vision loss is reduced.
  • Cataracts – The lenses of our eyes bend, refract light, and help us see. A healthy lens is clear. If a patient has cataracts, the lens is cloudy due to a buildup of protein in the eyes. This means the patient cannot see clearly due to the blurry lens.

Cataracts Surgery with Dr. Michelle Crosby - Dr. Michelle Crosby

Are you someone over the age of 65-70? Have you noticed any vision changes? Have you felt difficulty in night time driving? Need lot more light to read? It may be a cause for Cataracts. Dr. Michelle Crosby from Coastal Skin and Eye Institute San Diego, CA explains about Cataracts Surgery in this video.
Video Transcript Cataract surgery often takes no longer than 30 minutes to perform.

Most cataracts are due to age-related changes in the lens of the eye that causes it to become cloudy or opaque. However, other factors can contribute to cataract development, including diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

Most people over the age of 65-70 start to develop cataracts and will experience mild changes in their vision.

It can affect nighttime driving, needing a lot more light to read, and the overall quality of vision.

We recommend an annual examination for cataract patients who are over 65 years; that is when they start developing other issues like macular degeneration and glaucoma.

If an individual has a cataract and results in blurred vision that makes it difficult to do anything, it is then time to consider cataract surgery.

Cataract surgery is one of the most common surgeries in the western world.

We supply glasses while taking a personalized approach in determining the vision needs of each patient.

Those that are on the path to developing cataracts can slow their progression by reducing the lifestyle choices and habits that lead to the formation of cataracts.

  • Glaucoma – This is a disease that damages the eye’s optic nerve. Extra fluid builds up in the front of the eye and places pressure on the nerve. It is a cause of blindness in patients over 60. Blindness can be prevented when caught early.
  • Macular degeneration – As the leading cause of vision loss in people over 50, macular degeneration is common. The macula, or part of the eye needed for sharp, central vision, is damaged. A blurred center of vision is often the first symptom.
  • Other diseases – There is a link between the health of your eyes and certain health conditions. Your eye doctor can detect early signs of systemic conditions and diseases just by checking your eyes.
No one wants to lose his or her vision. With a healthy lifestyle and routine eye exams, you improve your chances of preserving your eyesight. If you notice any changes in your vision, including decreased vision, eye redness, pain, double vision, or flashes of light, do not hesitate to contact your eye doctor for an exam.

The Importance Of Comprehensive vision checks - Dr. Michelle Crosby

When was the last time you got your eyes checked? Should you wait till there is an issue in your vision to get your eyes checked? Did you know that it is important to get a vision check done even if you do not have a problem with your sight? Watch this video as Dr. Michelle Crosby explains why a comprehensive vision check is important.
Video Transcript Are early eye tests important?
My younger patients are not thinking about what their vision is going to be like in 20 years. During their 20s, they are not aware of what happens in their 40s, as our eye changes in our 40s and we have a hard time focusing up close.

What recommendations do you offer?
This is one thing I do talk to patients about when they come to see us in their early to mid-’40s, where they can have this great distance vision but pretty soon will be needing glasses to read. We discuss what we need to target them for should they get great distance vision, or one eye for near and one eye for distance to allow them to read without glasses.

Does Lasik treatment need touch-ups?
Lasik treatment does require a touch-up at some point because eyes change a little bit over time, and to keep your glasses-free, a touch-up of the procedure will allow that to happen.

Actual Patient Review

The best service in my 20 year history of buying eye wear. Had to buy a pair of mid-range glasses for both music and computer use, a tough requirement. Randy provided me just the right amount of information and help to make a great choice that satisfied all my criteria, including price. I could not be happier. Originally posted on
