What are laser acne treatments?

Laser acne treatments use specific wavelengths of light to target and reduce the bacteria that cause acne breakouts. These treatments can be used for all types of acne, including mild cases, moderate cystic acne and even severe nodular or cystic acne. In addition to targeting and reducing acne-causing bacteria, laser acne treatments also help reduce the appearance of redness and inflammation from existing acne. 

What types of lasers are used?

The type of laser used in laser acne treatments depends on the severity of your acne. For mild to moderate acne, pulsed dye lasers (PDLs) have been found to be effective. These lasers emit a yellow light that targets the bacteria responsible for acne breakouts. Treatment with a pulsed dye laser can help to reduce itching, pian and diminish color and flatten raised scars.

For more severe cases, fractional carbon dioxide lasers (CO2) may be used. These lasers are more powerful and can penetrate deeper into the skin to target and reduce acne-causing bacteria.

What does treatment involve?

Laser acne treatments will vary depending on the type of laser used, the severity of your acne, and the size of the treatment area. Generally, laser acne treatments require multiple sessions spaced out over several weeks or months. During each session, the laser is directed at the treatment area for a few minutes. You may experience some discomfort during the treatment, but it is usually minimal. Topical anesthesia can keep you comfortable. After the treatment, you may experience some redness and swelling, but this should resolve quickly.

Are there any side effects?

Most people experience minimal side effects from laser acne treatments. Some people may experience redness and swelling for a few days after the treatment, as well as some itching or tenderness in the area where the laser was used. These side effects are usually temporary and should resolve quickly. Rarely, people may experience more serious side effects such as blistering, discoloration or scarring.
