Treating Acne in San Diego area
Acne. Such a small word can bring about cringing and hiding for teens and adults. Although often thought of as a problem for teenagers going through puberty, acne can linger or start fresh in adulthood. At Coastal Skin and Eye Institute in San Diego, we have options for treating acne to give you beautiful, healthy skin. To treat the acne, we must first understand the type of acne and why it occurs in order to treat it appropriately with products, facial treatments, or lasers.

Why do we get acne?

Acne is most often found in teenagers but can impact adults as well. Since nearly 80 percent of teenagers get acne, it is considered a normal part of puberty caused by hormonal changes. Acne often improves with age, but it can strike again or even for the first time in adulthood. All skin types can be affected with acne. Acne is usually caused by hormonal changes, diet, or stress.

There are different types of acne. Not all acne requires medical attention. However, if you have tried regular cleansing and acne products without success, it may be time to seek help. The most common types of acne that require medical assistance include:

  • Recurrent acne - This type of acne continues to show up and may linger for two weeks or longer.
  • Milia - Although milia appear to be whiteheads, they will not pop. Milia forms due to clogged pores and may be the result of poor facial care.
  • Cystic acne - Appearing as large spots on the face, back, chest, shoulders, and arms, cystic acne can be painful and is the most common cause of acne scars.
  • Acne scars - Acne scarring occurs when pimples are popped causing damage to the skin.

Acne breakouts may be triggered by hormonal changes. When the pimple forms, the skin is clogged with bacteria and dead skin cells. With bacteria trapped within the skin, the skin becomes red, inflamed, and tender. It may also be itchy or filled with pus. Although it may be tempting, do not pop the pimple. When pimples burst, breakouts can worsen and skin infections are possible.

Laser for acne

The first rule of thumb in treating acne is to avoid picking at pimples. Popping pimples damages the skin forcing the body to create new collagen to repair the damage. Unfortunately, the new collagen may not be the same. It may be thicker than the smooth, flexible skin that is already present. The new collagen may not blend naturally or easily. This causes the appearance of scars or damaged areas of skin.

Treating current acne and preventing future acne breakouts may help lessen the possibility of scarring. Since every patient is different, a consultation is necessary to establish an appropriately customized treatment plan. For some patients, a single product or procedure may work. Others need a combination of treatments to achieve smoother, acne-free skin. Our team will work with you to create a custom plan for your needs. Our treatment options may include:

  • Extractions
  • Prescription topical or oral medications
  • Laser or light therapies
  • Acne scarring treatment such as laser skin resurfacing, dermabrasion, or dermal fillers

Blue or red light therapy is used to kill the bacteria known as Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes). P. acnes are found in the oil glands and are responsible for causing acne. Light therapy is an effective way to treat bacteria that are sensitive to light-based treatment. The light energy kills the bacteria and shrinks oil glands reducing the likelihood of future breakouts. Downtime is not necessary after light therapy.

Some laser procedures improve the texture and discoloration of the skin that has been caused by acne. IPL treatments may be a safe, effective way to manage your acne. As with light-based therapy, the laser’s energy destroys bacteria and shrinks sebaceous glands. The result is smoother skin and long-lasting relief from acne.

Regardless of the treatment method chosen, light and laser therapies are effective and non-surgical. A consultation is necessary for patients considering laser acne treatments to determine the best procedural options. Keep in mind that patients who are on Accutane may not be good candidates for laser treatments. A series of treatments is necessary to achieve healthier skin. Laser treatments do not replace good hygiene and skin care. Let us help you create a good skin care regimen.

The best service in my 20 year history of buying eye wear. Had to buy a pair of mid-range glasses for both music and computer use, a tough requirement.
